Description

The Sun in white light on December 26, 2020 with AR 2794 & 2795.

This 'first light image' was taken during my first session with my new white light solar white light imaging setup. With all the interesting sunspot activity at the start of this new solar cycle, I wanted to capture sunspot details in white light that I am missing out on with my H-alpha imaging setup. The white light imaging setup consists of a short focal length refractor, Herschel wedge, and continuum filter. The focal length of the refractor is pretty well matched to my H-alpha scope (360 mm @ F/6 for the Astro-Tech AT60ED and 350 mm @ F/7 for the Lunt LS50) so I get a very similar image scale and FOV using the same camera & barlow. My aim is to capture H-alpha and white light images of the same regions back to back.

Imaged with a Astro-Tech AT60ED, Lunt White Light Solar (Herschel) Wedge, 2.5x Televue Powermate, Baader Solar Continuum Filter 1¼" (540nm), and ZWO ASI290MM. Imaging train was configured to give ~F/15. Image capture using Firecapture (see below for exposure settings). Stacking in AutoStakkert3 (best 25% of 1000 frames). Processed in Registax (wavelet sharpening).

Exposure settings:

FPS (avg.)=51

Shutter=1.250ms

Gain=250 (41%)

Histogramm=92%
